biography
David Edward Barnard is a designer and sculptor, living and working in Saint Paul, Minnesota. His current sculpture work alternates between small-scale bronze figures and large-scale stone and steel sculptures. Past work focused on transparency and reflection, using plastics, glass and electric light. He is also active as a product designer and graphic designer.

As a student of Raymond Jacobson at Carleton College, Barnard absorbed a vocabulary of form and learned the basics of bronze casting and working in wax and clay. He also developed a portfolio of graphic posters. He received his BA in studio art in 1980, after which he was employed in the Minneapolis area as a graphic designer of books and periodicals, and as a sculpture studio assistant for Jacobson and later for Douglas Freeman.

In the ‘80s and ‘90’s his works were shown in group invitational exhibits at the Rourke Art Gallery in Moorhead, MN.

In the early 90’s, Barnard studied product design under Matt Kahn, David Kelley and Rolf Faste at Stanford University. Immediately following graduation in 1995, he took work at WET Design in Los Angeles, designing and programming very large architectural water features for clients world-wide.

Since the late 90’s, Barnard has continued to produce small bronzes and ceramic works, and most recently large stone assemblages.

Barnard is an admirer of Richard Serra, Henry Moore, pre-historic standing stones, Inuit inuksuk, giant redwoods, and all things imposing and ancient. The textures and imposing presence and serenity of rock faces in northern Minnesota’s lake country, the massive bronze works of Freeman and Jacobson, and the graceful and powerful water features made by WET Design, all echo in Barnard’s current work.
